Author Interview: Maggie Stiefvater/Giveaway

July 20, 2010
Maggie Stiefvater is one of my favorite authors and to be able to provide an interview with her is both exciting and a dream come true! The first book of hers I read was Shiver and ever since, her words and stories have captivated me. Thank you, Scholastic, for setting this interview up and for providing a copy of Linger! Enjoy the interview!

What has been your favorite part about being an author?

Well, I always say that there’s the selfish part and the unselfish part. The selfish part is getting the first copy of a new book that I’ve written. Petting the cover and admiring the words and reading my favorite scene in real living words. Whoo! And then getting the foreign editions is pretty awesome as well. And then the unselfish part of me loves getting e-mails from readers whose lives were truly changed by my novels or blog.

Did you always know The Wolves of Mercy Falls would have alternating narrators?
Yep. It’s a device that I’ve always loved because I love seeing characters from outside their own perspective.

If you could choose any musician to be Sam’s voice, so to speak, who would you choose?

Hm. Jim Sturgess. Jonas & Plunkett. Matt Costa. Joshua Radin. Someone undramatic who sounds the same singing with his guitar at the end of the couch as in the recording studio.

Where did the character of Cole originate from?

I wanted a character that would be opposite to Sam in many ways, to bring out the extremes in Sam’s personality. And in many ways he was based on a character that I first began to play with in a short story I wrote for the Merry Sisters of Fate. (http://community.livejournal.com/merry_fates/37340.html)

How did you create your werewolf mythology?
The weather bit? That’s the backbone of it. I needed something to inspire the change that was longer than a month but was still natural, cyclical, and predictable.

Do you have anything planned after Forever is finished?
Yep indeedy. Scholastic will be publishing my Secret YA Paranormal novel the year after FOREVER. I can’t tell you anything other than it’s about blood and beaches and kissing.

Congrats! How exciting! I am so happy that you were able to interview an author that has been such an inspiration to you. I will be storming the library–like yesterday!–to pick up Shiver. You’ve convinced me just by your sheer passion and enthusiasm for this author’s writing.

Yay! I’m so excited you have an interview with Maggie! I love her answer to the question of whom she would like to be sam’s voice while singing, Jim Stugess’ voice is amazing. I haven’t heard of the others, but I’ll have to check them out. Also, the rest of the interview is awesome, it’s cool to finally get into an authors head sometimes. Anyway, thanks again for the contest!

I love Joshua Radin. Great interview. I can’t wait to read Linger. Since I live outside of the US I don’t qualify, but I’ll be buying it soon anyway.
