Today, October 11, is National Coming Out Day. It’s an important and, for some, a frightening day. It’s a day to lend support, understanding, and love to those who have stepped outside their box to live the life they want and deserve to live. I know it’s scary, though, to go beyond one’s safety net. The world isn’t a perfectly safe and accepting place, and some people face more dangers than others. But the world and its people are changing for the better, and today is as an especially great day to show just how far we’ve come.
I applaud those who are using today to come out and I applaud those who have already done so. And those of you who are still “in the closet”, I wholeheartedly applaud you, too, because each and every one of us, no matter where we are in our lives, deserve the same level of strength and love. We all have dreams and fears — and we all want to love and be loved. Despite our differences, we are the same.
So, happy National Coming Out Day and remember to be kind, open, and loving today and every day going forward.
Be proud, write loud.
