Book Thoughts: The Thorn and the Blossom by Theodora Goss

December 5, 2016

The Thorn and the Blossom

When a coworker first told me about Theodora Goss’s The Thorn and the Blossom, I thought it sounded interesting, especially the accordion-style format and dual narrative. But when they brought in their copy for me to borrow, the book got lost in the TBR pile shuffle. Finally, wanting to set the book free, I brought it home—and devoured it. I definitely recommend picking up a copy! Here’s what I thought of it:

Romantic and unique, The Thorn and the Blossom is a charming tale about star-crossed love with a dash of magical realism for good measure. Goss’s writing is atmospheric and smooth, and reads like a fairy tale in and of itself. Bravo to Quirk Books for publishing the story in such a wonderful format: accordion-style with one side told from Brendon’s perspective and the other from Evelyn’s. Each narrative reveals details that are missing from the other, and both work seamlessly on their own and together as a whole.

I definitely wanted to read this one after seeing you share a beautiful photo of it! It sounds very intriguing, and I like the idea of reading something that’s in an unusual format too.
