Review: Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting

February 17, 2011

Kimberly Derting has done it again! Desires of the Dead is one of those sequels that succeed in being just as amazing—if not more—as the first novel. Like The Body Finder, Desires of the Dead is full of mystery, romance, and amazing writing that will pull readers in and render them unable to put the book down.

Ms. Derting’s writing in The Body Finder is amazing; it’s descriptive, engaging, fluid, and all around beautiful. Her writing in Desires of the Dead is no different. In fact, it’s even better! Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop! The vivid imagery made the story come alive and the whole story unfolded in my mind like a movie. The characters’ voices are all distinct and consistent, and the dialogue never feels awkward or forced.

The story is told in the third person, but focuses on primarily on Violet. Even though Violet doesn’t narrate the story herself, I still felt like she was. I felt Violet’s fear, anxiety, depression, and anger while reading. Ms. Derting has given Violet a likeable and believable personality, which makes her relatable and believable.

Violet and Jay’s relationship becomes a bit rocky and the drama between them helps give the story a more personal feel. Violet and Jay are one of my favorite literary couples and my own heart went on an emotional ride as they experienced some issues. Ms. Derting does address the issue of sex, but does so in a tasteful and realistic manner.

Along with the romance, the action is another major aspect of the story. The identity of the “bad guy” may reveal itself quickly to some readers, but unexpected twists will keep them engaged. Ms. Derting has once again included chapters focusing solely on the antagonist and these chapters made me question how I felt about the bad guy.

There are no words to describe how much I love Desires of the Dead. It’s intense, engaging, romantic, dramatic (in the right ways), and just all around amazing! Some sequels fall flat, but this one certainly does not. I cannot wait to read the future installments! Readers will be sucked into a story that will warm (and tug at) their hearts, keep them turning the pages, and leave them desiring more! And yes, the slight pun was intended. 🙂
