Review: Intrinsical by Lani Woodland

August 20, 2010
I have a love and hate relationship with GoodReads. I hate it because I find so many books I want to read and then I spend money at the bookstore buying said books. But I love it because I’m always finding new authors and books to enjoy. I guess I just need to have an endless supply of money to support my book buying addiction…
Anyway, Lani Woodland is an author I discovered through GoodReads. Her young adult debut novel, Intrinsical, is published through the new publisher, Pendrell Publishing. Having emailed Ms. Woodland and the people at Pendrell Publishing a few times and finding them to be nothing but friendly, I was given the chance to read Intrinsical early.

Intrinsical is one of the most engaging and fast-paced novels I have read. Every single page made me want to keep reading and I hated when I was too busy to do so! Lani Woodland’s writing is beautiful and fresh. Her descriptions are well-written, never over the top, and create such vivid images. She has given Yara, the main character, a funny, beautiful, and realistic voice that makes the narration all the more enjoyable.

Speaking of Yara, I really liked her. Her reluctance to accept her Waker abilities is believable and understandable. But when she starts to accept them and learns more about her powers, she grows as a person. She doesn’t start off as weak necessarily, but towards the end of the novel, she’s stronger and more assertive.

The romance in the novel is clean and sweet. I liked that Yara and Brent didn’t fall in love the moment they clapped eyes on each other. Their relationship grew naturally and Ms. Woodland illustrated their feelings for one another wonderfully through their actions and words.

Ms. Woodland wastes no time throwing the reader into the story and letting Yara’s story take flight. The events of the story are sometimes confusing and glossed over, but overall, everything fits together to present a fresh and exciting story.

I cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed/loved reading Intrinsical! If you don’t purchase a copy or request one at your library for you to check out, then you’ll be missing out on an incredible debut! For more information about Intrinsical and Lani Woodland, please visit the following sites:

Why was I under the impression that Intrinsical was an Elevensies release? *face palm*

Anyway, sounds great! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I hope to buy/receive my very own copy of it soon.

I’m so excited to read it! I’m one who likes clean urban fantasy and I’ve heard this one fits that description as well as being enchanting.

That’s a gorgeous cover, and your review had the magic words – ‘development’ and ‘relationship grew naturally’. I hate insta-love and characters who don’t do anything but fall in love by the end of the book. I think Imma have to try and find this one. Good review 🙂

lol, I found this novel on Goodreads too. Great review! The cover is striking and the plot sounds interesting… too bad it doesn’t seem to be in stores in Canada. 🙁

Intrinsical sounds like someone using bad grammar, ha! But your review does the book justice. I will look for it as a possible library buy.
