Review: The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

November 6, 2012

Last year, Michelle Hodkin astounded readers with her debut the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, a sexy, dark, psychological story with a unique supernatural twist. It’s a book I still think and talk about. I had high expectations for the sequel, the Evolution of Mara Dyer. I mean, I called the first book “an exceptional piece of art”. So it’s not hard to see why I expected so much out of the sequel. What I found, however, is more than I could ever imagine. The Evolution of Mara Dyer is a thrilling installment that goes deeper and deeper into Mara’s riveting and sinister world.

Ms. Hodkin’s writing continues to prove just how talented she is. Her descriptions bring everything to life and I can’t wait to go back and flag the passages I found to be particularly stunning. I’ll probably end up marking every word on every page. The characters are engaging and the author does a great job balancing them all.

Mara may be a bit of an unreliable narrator, but that’s what makes her so great. Ms. Hodkin has given her a strong and believable voice, one that makes my heart race, makes me laugh, and makes me care.

And Noah? Well, it’s no secret that I loved him ever since he first appeared in the first book, but my love for him is even stronger. He is so tragic, beautiful, and sarcastic that you can’t help but love him.

The plot advances and unfolds in an exciting, chilling, and surprising manner. Ms. Hodkin clearly knows how to keep readers not only engaged and invested in the story, but also how to keep them guessing. I think I’m left with even more questions than when I started!

Overall, the Evolution of Mara Dyer is a worthy follow-up to Michelle Hodkin’s debut. The author is a natural talent that has presented a well-crafted, haunting, and twisted story, one that will have readers turning the pages with fervor. This is, like the first book, a work of literary art that deserves to be appreciated and devoured.
