The song is a short little ditty called “Stay” and was inspired by Gayle Forman’s beautiful novel, If I Stay. I absolutely LOVE this book and I think it is breathtaking. I can only describe it with five words: beautiful, amazing, breathtaking, heartwrenching, and romantic. The day after I finished reading If I Stay, a friend let me borrow her old microphone and I was fooling around with it and GarageBand. Before I knew it, an a capella song was born.
Side note: for those of you who may not know, “a capella” basically means without music in relation to singing. So, an a capella song is one where it’s just vocals.
The melody came first and as I made up lyrics on the spot, I found them to reflect Mia’s situation in If I Stay. I stopped singing and took a few minutes to properly write the lyrics. After revising them to fit the melody, I set to work recording it. Another idea popped into my head and so I spent an hour trying to execute it. The idea was to make it a song with harmonies. This resulted in having to layer a few different vocal lines overtop each other.
Sorry for the long-ish explanation, but if you’re still reading, thank you! I am so excited (and nervous) to share “Stay” with you all and I honestly thought it would be the death of me. Because of having to record each of the three layers separately, it took me over 10 tries to record a version that not only sounded good, but one I liked. Still, some of the cut offs aren’t perfect, but who likes perfect, anyway? 🙂
Okay, before you all die of boredom, here’s my new-ish song, “Stay”! Enjoy!
If you would like to link to the post on your blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc…go ahead and do so! I have no problems with that, but please do not rip the song and spread it around the internet. Thank you!
*”Stay” is an original song written, recorded, and performed by myself. The video was made with Windows Movie Maker using a photo taken by me and the cover image from Barnes and Nobles’ website.
