Review: Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow

July 31, 2010

Being a huge fan of Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series, Lili St. Crow’s Strange Angels novels always showed up as recommendations on Amazon and other sites. So, instead of going to the library like a normal person and checking Strange Angels out to see if I liked it before buying it, I went to the bookstore and bought it as well as the sequel, Betrayals.

It’s a good thing I really liked Strange Angels and that my money didn’t go to waste. 🙂

Dru is a great character and narrator. She’s tough and knows how to take care of herself, but she’s also vulnerable and often doubts herself. The combination of her strength and weaknesses make her a well-rounded and believable character. Lili St. Crow has also given Dru an authentic teenage voice. Her sarcasm is hilarious and I laughed more than I thought I would.

Graves is also an enjoyable character. Despite hardly knowing Dru and being thrown into her world, he trusts her and always has her back. He handles everything surprisingly well and offers Dru companionship, which is something she needs. In a strange way, Christophe also provides Dru with companionship and I can’t wait to see how his character becomes more involved in the series. Despite his cold behavior, I think he has a soft spot for Dru.

Lili St. Crow’s writing is great, too! Every character has a distinct voice and personality, but what I liked most about the characterizations were how well everyone is developed. Smaller characters like Dru’s Gran and one of her teachers are even fleshed out enough for them to leave an impression. The descriptions are also well written–not over the top, but not bland. The pacing is a bit slow at times, but the action scenes and the slight mystery will keep readers going.

Much to my delight, I sensed a hint of romance growing between Dru and Graves. Or maybe it was just my imagination. Either way, I’m anxious to see how their friendship grows and what it grows in to. I’m also very curious to see what kind of relationship Dru and Christophe will have. 🙂

With fast-paced action scenes, developed characters, and great writing, Strange Angels is a great book and I am so glad I bought it! I can’t wait to read Betrayals and then on to the newly released, Jealousy! I would definitely recommend this series to fans of the Vampire Academy series and to readers who like darker, more “urban” stories. (I’m not sure if this qualifies as urban fantasy, but when I think of UF, Strange Angels comes to mind)
