The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting caught my attention the minute I saw the beautiful blue flower set against the simple black background. What can I say, I love a good cover. After reading the description of the novel, I knew the cover was just a small indication that The Body Finder would be an amazing book and it would be an understatement to say that it is.
Growing up with the ability to sense dead bodies, murdered ones to be exact, Violet Ambrose’s life has never been normal. To make her life even more complicated, she develops feelings for her best friend, Jay, who knows of her ability and does his best to support her. When local girls begin disappearing only to turn up dead, Violet knows she can track down the murderer faster than the police can. Jay agrees to help and Violet secretly wonders if he wants more than friendship as well.
Wow, The Body Finder is one impressive debut! Of course, Violet and Jay are my favorite characters and, in my opinion, the strongest. Unlike many relationships in books nowadays, Violet and Jay are a believable and lovable couple. Jay’s need to keep Violet safe is fierce, but not in an overly-intense kind of way. I also really like how Violet’s parents are not only a part of her life, but also of the story itself. They accept and understand their daughter’s ability and do their best to support her. The seamlessly inserted chapters told from the murderer’s point-of-view add even more depth to the novel and makes it even more impressive.
Of course, Kimberly Derting deserves all the credit for these wonderful aspects of The Body Finder. Her writing is beautifully strong and engaging. She made me laugh, made my heart race in fear and l felt like I was really experiencing the events of the story.
With mystery, action, and romance, The Body Finder is an amazing novel that should not go unread and I hope people will love it as much as I do! I cannot wait for the sequel, Desires of the Dead!
