Review: The Broken Lake by Shelena Shorts

August 29, 2010

Oh, goodness. First off, reading The Broken Lake (and The Pace for that matter) is like reading a piece of literary heaven. Shelena Shorts has written a beautiful and captivating sequel and I don’t know how I’m going to endure the wait for the third installment in the series, The Iron Quill.

Once again, Sophie and Wes found their way into my heart and mind. Ms. Shorts knows how to write tender, sweet, and romantic scenes that aren’t over the top or unclean. Through their actions, Sophie and Wes demonstrate just how much they love each other and although their relationship has developed rather quickly, it’s extremely believable and their love makes the reader feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It made me feel that way at least…

The story moves fluidly and draws the reader in with not only the romance, but with the action and secrecy of Wes’ condition. As is expected, the conflict in the novel is connected to the events in The Pace, but in a way that proves to be fresh and new. A few new characters are introduced and although they served mostly as supporting characters, they’re all developed and rounded enough to get a feel for who they are. I especially enjoyed seeing Sophie’s friend, Kerry, and seeing how close the two of them really are.

Shelena Shorts’ writing is just as magnificent and beautiful as it is in The Pace. She has given Sophie a believable teenage voice and has given her all the characteristics needed to make a strong, interesting, and loveable character. Ms. Shorts’ talent for writing such vivid characters continues to amaze me. Most importantly, however, her writing is fluid and never feels forced or awkward.

If you haven’t started this series yet, you’re missing out on an incredible story. Some sequels fall flat, but The Broken Lake not only lived up to my expectations, it exceeded them and more. Each page is filled with Shelena Shorts’ beautiful writing and I couldn’t stop reading until I reached the end, which only left me desperately wanting more!

So glad someone else loves this series too. I’m almost finished with my copy of TBL and you’re right about everything you said. (I do think I liked The Pace more though… there’s something about love out of reach that pulls at me more than love acquired.)

I wasn’t a huge fan of the first book in the series (I just found it to be predictable). That being said, I really enjoyed the second book and cannot believe the killer cliffhangers she ends these books with! I can’t wait for the third book!

Thanks for the review. I haven’t heard about this one yet, and I want to look more into the series now.
