Having read multiple rave reviews for this book, I was really excited to read it and hoped my expectations would be met. Next to vampires and werewolves, I love angels, so I was anxious to see what Ms. Hand had to offer.
Clara is one great main character. I found myself laughing and smiling at some of things she says/does–in a good way! 🙂 What I love most about her, though, is that she was already part of the supernatural world. Despite this, she still struggled with it, which helped make her even more relatable in my opinion. And that’s another thing I love about her; she’s easy to relate to. Even her issues with her mom are understandable despite the context.
The romance turned out differently than I expected, but was still my favorite part. I’m afraid to say anything that would spoil it, but if you’re a lover of romance, then this book will definitely be a great read for you! The relationship started off slow and grew into something real, something believable.
Hand’s angels lean more on the religious side, but not in an in-your-face kind of way. I love the idea of “purpose”, as well as Clara’s attempts to fly. They were humorous at times, but I understood her frustration, her feeling like a failure. The angel-blood mythology is interesting and fresh, too, especially the coloring of the wings.
I know this is a rather short review, but as I mentioned above, I’m afraid of spoiling the story. I haven’t read an angel story like this before and I urge everyone to pick up a copy! Unearthly is a romantic story with beautiful writing and characters that truly do come alive. I had fallen in love with the synopsis and cover prior to reading it and I have fallen even more in love with now that I’ve read it. 🙂
